2020: A Year to Remember

While we may have lost count of how many days we've been in quarantine, we have kept a keen record of our growth in numbers this year — and the results are staggering!

  • OATS is on track to double the number of older adults served in 2020

  • Over 2,500 Senior Planet classes and events were offered online

  • Older adults have participated in Senior Planet virtual programming over 100,000 times since mid-March

  • 630 hours of training were provided for the Connected NYCHA initiative

  • 102 new tweeters followed OATS on Twitter
(Give us a follow to make it 103?)

As we approach a new year of unknowns, we are reminded that there is always room for reflection and gratitude. We're thankful for every member, participant, and supporter who helped make 2020 a success!

Making an Impact

The five impact areas of focus at OATS and Senior Planet are advocacy, social engagement, financial security, health, and creativity. Here's a quick round-up of some of our biggest impact-focused initiatives of the year!

Advocacy

Raising Hell
NPR's Sam Sanders moderated this thought-provoking panel discussion featuring some of America’s most influential older adult activists. From racial equity to environmental justice, we explored the intersection of modern civic movements and how older adults are at the center of social change.

Social Engagement

Seniors In Play - Virtual Acting
Led by actor Tony Plana, older adults moved their acting classes online in collaboration with Senior Planet San Antonio. From beginners to seasoned players, participants rehearsed and performed together using Zoom.

Financial Security

Online Banking with Zelle®
With banks closing or limiting hours, older adults needed a safe and easy way to manage their money from home. We partnered with Zelle to provide weekly classes on P2P mobile payments and articles on topics like scam protection.

Health

Senior Planet Sponsored Athlete Program
Five older adult athletes chronicled their fitness journeys over the course of 2020 as they strengthened their bodies and minds through a variety of methods.

Creativity

Virtual Holiday Entrepreneurship Fair
Distance couldn't stop the Senior Planet community from coming together to celebrate the season. 16 members and participants showed off their handmade products, from fashion accessories to home goods and more.
