What
Caregivers Know About Empathy Could Help Us Find Common Ground—
And Help Us Tackle Social Isolation Perspectives
from C. Grace Whiting, President/CEO of the National Alliance for
Caregiving on the unique value that friend and family caregivers
bring to our society, as they navigate health, aging, and
disability challenges with the people in their care. This piece
was published in the EngAged
blog. "It’s
been a tough year for many of us, in ways we might not have
anticipated this time last year. In times like these, I think
about caregivers and the gift they’ve given to me – the
recognition that all people have value. A simple basic building
block to finding common ground with others. If someone in your
life is caring for someone else – reach out, listen, and give
them a moment to be heard. Help them feel less isolated and more
understood." |

| How to Be a Caregiver "Even
if you're not a caregiver now, odds are that you will find
yourself in the role someday. In the United States about
one in five adults is providing unpaid
health or supportive care to someone they love — an aging
parent, a family member or child with a disability or a spouse,
partner or friend with an illness. We asked experts on
caregiving and aging, as well as dozens of people who have been
caregivers themselves, for their best advice to help the next
generation of caregivers." From:

Caregiving
During the Holidays and COVID-19 |
|
"Across
the country, 48 million caregivers have faithfully cared for
loved ones through the COVID-19 pandemic, taking on more
responsibilities and stress. But as this year of uncertainty
comes to a close, more than half (53%) of family caregivers
report feeling sadder about the holiday season, according to
'COVID-19 Impact on Family Caregivers’ Holiday Plans,' a
just-released survey conducted by AARP. According
to the research, the pandemic is taking a significant toll on
caregivers with the health crisis impacting not only their
holiday plans, but more urgently, their own wellbeing. Nearly
half of surveyed caregivers (44%) say COVID-19 has had a negative
impact on their mental health and that of the person they care
for (46%), and nearly two-thirds (64%) say they’re concerned
about the future." From:

Partnering
to Support Caregivers in Blood Cancer "Caring
for a loved one who has been diagnosed with cancer is not a role
people ask for. However, more than 2.8 million partners,
children, parents, friends and neighbors in the U.S. are caring
for someone living with cancer, and that number is on the rise.
For caregivers of those with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) –
the most common type of leukemia in adults – that role presents
its own unique set of challenges. To help identify and address
the unmet needs of those caring for someone living with CLL,
AstraZeneca is partnering with the National
Alliance for Caregiving (NAC)
and The
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). As part
of this multi-year partnership, we will launch a survey
specifically designed to identify the challenges and key areas of
unmet needs faced by caregivers of loved ones living with CLL.
Results of the survey will help inform resources to support and
recognize the important work caregivers do to care for those
living with CLL, from diagnosis through treatment and
beyond." From:

Care Special Report |
|
"Next
Avenue has released a new special
report presented by The John A. Hartford
Foundation, 'Taking Care,' about family caregivers of older
adults. No two
families look and function quite the same, including their
approach to elder care. By choice or circumstance, Americans find
themselves in crucial support roles for parents, aunts, uncles,
grandparents or friends — weathering grief, stress, physical and
financial strain. And there's no how-to guide. This five-month
series is illuminating the lives of family caregivers across
America." From: John A. Hartford |
