Staying in Touch

Hello, JCA Interages Volunteers,

As the sun sets earlier and earlier during this winter month, we love the lights. Their glow provides a good environment in which to contemplate New Year's resolutions. We hope you will consider volunteering in 2021 through our virtual opportunities. Happy Holidays!

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU

The next Coffee Club (held once a month) is

Tuesday, January 19, 2020 @ 2:00 pm. Register here.

Meet with Interages staff members via Zoom. We would love to talk with you and learn about your volunteer experience, as well as your ideas for programming and partnering with other organizations.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS BADGE

Dear Volunteers, If you have gone through the MCPS Fingerprinting and Badging process, please provide a photo of your MCPS badge to Indira Dingledine, Volunteer Manager at idingledine@accessjca.org or by text to (202) 441-0357. The badge is required for volunteering with MCPS students virtually, as well as in-person. Many of our partnering organizations also require that volunteers go through the MCPS fingerprinting and badging.

TUTOR TRAINING

JCA Heyman Interages is offering in-depth tutor training based on the Orton-Gillingham (OG) method. The Orton-Gillingham approach is for students who are struggling to sound out and spell words. One-on-one tutoring in sequential phonics is the intervention that science has shown to be most effective.

Orton-Gillingham: What You Need to Know

This training in OG style tutoring is designed for volunteers who will work with students twice a week on a structured reading and writing intervention. Tutors will learn what they need to know about the structure of language and multi-sensory learning techniques. Tutors will also have the skills they need to meet students where they are: learning letters, hearing and counting syllables, learning syllable types and common spellings, and reading and writing words and sentences.

Children in grades PreK to 3rd grade benefit from this method but it is valuable for older children.

The training is taking place on January, 4,6,8,11, and 13. Training is from 1:00 pm -3:00 pm on each training day. This is a 10-hour training that will be done in 5 two-hour Zoom sessions. 15 people can participate. The deadline for signing up is December 28, 2020. Those who take the training commit to be at all the sessions and agree to make use of putting the training to use as soon as a student or family is found. If you are interested, please REGISTER HERE. For more information contact Indira Dingledine, Volunteer Manager, at idingledine@accessjca.org or (202) 441 -0357.

TWO INTERAGES VOLUNTEERS PUBLISH A BOOK

Two Interages volunteers, Terrie Manchester and Ann Jackman, have written a book about Grandreaders. “As Best Friends Do: Will and Rosa Meet the Grandreaders” is based on their experiences as Grandreaders volunteers.

Grandreaders is an Interages literacy program for children in second grade. The program is designed to increase a child's ability to read, enhance reading skills, and encourage a love of reading, all facilitated by caring and nurturing older adult volunteers. Terri and Ann have been Grandreaders volunteers for five years.

Terrie and Ann say they loved the Grandreaders so much they thought there was a need for a book to explain the program from the perspectives of both the children and the teachers. The book introduces two darling children and two teachers. Five chapters follow the program as it progresses to the end of the school year.

For some children, Grandreaders volunteers are the oldest people they know, often older than their grandparents. Ann and Terrie say they appreciate the Interages mission to bring older adults together with young people to value each other. Terrie and Ann also found meaningful friendships through the program.

Terrie and Ann took trips to the library to research the variety of questions posed by publishing a children’s book. They had to figure out how to write, edit, illustrate, publish, and market a book. The two held meetings at Panera for lunch, using a pencil and journal instead of a laptop to write. The lovely illustrations were done by Ann’s daughter-in-law, Amy Jackman, who has a graphic arts background.

At the end of the book, Terrie and Ann summarize what they hope the book brings to the reader. The final page provides information about JCA Interages.

Terrie and Ann are delighted that when in-person classes resume, each student in Grandreaders will get their book to use. “As Best Friends Do: Will and Rosa Meet the Grandreaders” is available on Amazon in the US and UK.

“Latin Swing meets Jazz meets Klezmer”

“Nathalie Braux is the REAL DEAL!”

“You’ll be on your feet dancing!”

Nathalie weaves elements of jazz in all her compositions, producing pieces primarily for live performances, as well as for theater and film. Braux’s hit single, “Polka Dot Blues,” is recognized worldwide and was included in Putumayo’s Jazz Around the World (2009) and Cappuccino CafĂ© (2017).

Not content with one project, Nathalie invented her own unique genre when creating the band, Sherele, which for the past decade has captivated Mexican audiences, young and old alike. Combining influences from klezmer, modern jazz, and Latin American rhythms, Sherele compels concert-goers out of their seats in joyous solidarity with their smooth and playful sounds.
