Moderator:

Featuring:

Gloria Thomas Anderson, PhD, LMSW | Advance Care Planning Expert, Author of "The African-American Spiritual and Ethical Guide to End-of-Life Care & Toolkit"

Friday, March 19, 2021

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

This conversation seeks to give a glimpse into the African-American community from the concept of "It Takes a Village", to explore some of the meaningful community rituals that have been dismantled by the pandemic. We will explore some of the cultural and generational values as they relate to the church, elder care, and social interactions on the personal and community level. This community dialogue will be an open discussion - we are looking at ways to maintain hope in the New Year.

Objectives:

1.    To define the origin of the village concept from an African-American historical perspective and its relevance to cultural and generational values

2.    To look at the losses of meaningful, community rituals that have been impacted most by COVID-19

3.    To consider ways to nurture our community during the pandemic that encourages healing and restoration

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Mental health researchers are already stating that there is a developing collective trauma associated with the COVID‐19 pandemic. While we are all experiencing this globally, collective trauma is building up disproportionately within certain subgroups of people exposed more directly to the impact of the pandemic - such as healthcare and mental health professionals. Anticipating the needs of these workers is vital, not only for their personal well‐being, but to assure that these valuable employees will recover, be healthy , and continue serving others — including those also impacted by the pandemic. We will identify early symptoms of the trauma, make a distinction between burnout and depression, and offer a healthy discussion and tools for managers to avoid common traps, such as toxic positivity and unattainable balance.

Objectives:

1.    Define burnout and individual/collective trauma, and evaluate its impact on the workplace

2.    Describe the causes of burnout and individual/collective trauma

3.    Identify the differences between burnout, stress, and mental illnesses

4.    Discuss organizational strategies to address burnout and the traumatic aftermath of the COVID-19 experience at a personal and community level
