One of every six employees in America is balancing work and caring for a family member. Family caregivers of all ages, especially those age 50-plus, are major contributors to businesses—and the economy overall. Yet, policies and supports have not kept pace with the growing demands on working family caregivers. A recent report from AARP details the significant benefits – to employers, to employees and to the overall economy – of supporting working family caregivers. Those findings will be the centerpiece of a virtual event co-hosted by AARP and Forbes, and featuring Debra Whitman, AARP Chief Public Policy Officer and Nancy LeaMond, AARP EVP, Chief Advocacy & Engagement Officer, on March 26 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. ET.
As the U.S. faces unprecedented economic challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is time to talk about supporting family caregivers in the workplace as part of a larger strategy for economic recovery and growth. Employers who provide family caregivers with flexible or teleworking arrangements, referrals to community resources, and affordable back-up care can improve their own bottom lines as well as the national GDP. Importantly, these kinds of workplace supports help reduce income inequalities among those who have been disproportionately impacted, such as older women and people of color.
