Can Caregiving Cause PTSD?

"Kaci Smith, 36, recalls the gradual emergence of her PTSD symptoms about three years ago when she’d been caring for her mother at home following her mom’s 2012 stroke.

'It would be things like almost feeling like a panic attack,' says Smith, a Rochester, N.Y. teacher. 'If she would complain of leg pain, I would think, ‘Oh, no. It’s a blood clot. We’re going to have to go through all this medical stuff again.’'

Smith, who stopped working when COVID-19 forced the U.S. into lockdown, has been a 24/7 caregiver for her mother during the pandemic and is on anti-anxiety medicine."

Q & A: REACH Community Dementia Caregiving Program

"REACH Community is a dementia caregiving program that empowers caregivers to problem-solve challenges they experience from caregiving. Evolving out of a successful program originally funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and then further developed within the Veterans Affairs (VA) system, REACH Community has brought the REACH model into non-veteran communities, helping a broader population of caregivers in need of support.

COVID-19 and Social Isolation

I

"For approximately 2.5 million elderly Americans in long-term care, the threats posed by the coronavirus are twofold: rampant deaths and an unprecedented era of isolation.

I

Visitors were banned at long-term care facilities nationwide in mid-March, and communal dining and activities were mostly canceled. While those changes may have been necessary to slow the spread of the virus, medical experts say they proved devastating for the mental and physical health of residents, particularly the more than 40 percent who have Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia at such facilities."

New Grant to Build on the engAGED National Resource Center

The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging has been awarded a three-year grant from the U.S. Administration for Community Living, Administration on Aging. The new project will expand and enhance the Aging Network’s efforts to create additional social engagement opportunities to further address the social engagement needs of older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers, building upon the current work of the n4a-administered engAGED National Resource Center.

This project will take a targeted approach focused on the implementation of specific community involvement, technology, intergenerational, and volunteerism interventions with a particular emphasis on addressing the social engagement needs of low-income, rural, minority, and other underserved populations.

Community Health Workers

"Many health care stakeholders are interested in scaling up [community health workers] to maximize opportunities for CHWs to connect people to needed health and social services in their communities. To support this momentum, the Playbook has curated a diverse set of resources for health care organizations interested in understanding: (1) the evidence base for how CHW programs affect health outcomes, including implications for health equity; and (2) implementation tools and first-person perspectives from health care stakeholders on developing or expanding CHW programs," (From: Better Care Playbook).
