NAMI - Family and Friend Caregiver Support

NAMI Maryland offers support and education for families and friends of individuals living with
mental illness.

The NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program is a free, 12-week course for family caregivers of individuals with mental illnesses. The course is taught by trained family members and all instruction and course materials are free to class participants.

The course includes:
  • Current information about schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder (manic depression), panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, and co-occurring brain disorders and addictive disorders
  • How to manage crises, solve problems, and communicate effectively
  • Taking care of yourself and managing stress
  • Developing the confidence and stamina to provide support with compassion
  • Finding and using local support services
  • Current treatments, including evidence-based therapies, medications, and side effects
  • The impact of mental illness on the entire family
