Support for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

The Advisory Council to Support Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (SGRG), led by the Department
of Health and Human Service’s Administration for Community Living, recently delivered its initial report to Congress. As a federal member of this council, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Office for Older Americans served alongside kinship caregivers, grandparent advocates, and caregiving experts as part of a multi-faceted, two-year effort that gathered input from grandparent and kinship caregivers nationwide.

The SGRG Council’s report to Congress includes an overview of issues that grandparents and kinship caregivers face across the country and provides recommendations for addressing them. The recommendations fall under five goals:
Increase public awareness of and outreach to kin and grandparent caregivers
Increase engagement of grandfamilies and kinship caregivers in systems that serve both caregivers and children.
Increase culturally appropriate supports and services to members of kinship families and grandfamilies.
Boost financial and workplace security for members of kinship families and grandfamilies.
Drive better and more accurate data about the true prevalence of kinship families and grandfamilies, their needs, and evidence-based practices to support them.
