'Tis the Season of GivingGive or receive the gift of mobility. Many residents of Maryland require the use of durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs, rollators, shower chairs, power wheelchairs and other assistive devices, in order to maintain their safety and mobility. Often the cost of this equipment is a financial burden, not only to uninsured residents, but also to insured residents whose insurance will not approve the equipment needed or whose approval is delayed. To address this need, we have developed an innovative program called Maryland Durable Medical Equipment Re-Use to provide durable medical equipment to Maryland residents. The program serves Marylanders with any illness, injury, or disability, regardless of age. All donated equipment is sanitized, refurbished, and made ready for use. This service will greatly improve the mobility and quality of life of many Maryland residents. The program provides a daily automated call and daily message. If a participant doesn't pick up the phone after 3 attempts, an alternate is called to check on the older adult. The program is FREE to all Maryland residents over 65. Registration is easy. The Community for LifeSMprogram provides three core services: home maintenance, service navigation, and transportation. The program’s services are designed to prevent the predictable challenges of aging that can require admittance into a high level of care facility, such as a nursing home or assisted living facility. All Marylanders over the age of 60 (homeowners or renters) are eligible to enroll in the Maryland Community for LifeSM program. There are no health or income qualifications. Consider gifting this low-cost membership service to a loved one or treat yourself to a priceless gift that can help you age in place.
