THE INTERAGES CONNECTOR

STAYING CONNECTED WHILE STAYING HOME

SHARE From A Distance

SHARE From A Distance provides meaningful connections between young people and older adults.

JOIN SHARE FROM A DISTANCE AND BECOME A PEN PAL

Are you or someone you know interested in being matched with a young person to exchange letters back and forth? Build a relationship with a young person during this difficult time when people of ALL ages are feeling isolated and eager to make connections. Only first names are given and all correspondence is filtered through JCA staff. Even as more and more activities open up and students return to in-person classes in the fall, it is rewarding to make these "old-fashioned" connections with a young person and share perspectives as we move into post-pandemic life.

You can choose to write to a student via email or postal mail. We need more older adults to match with the many interested students. For more information or to sign up, please email sharefromadistance@accessjca.org. Thanks for your help and support!

MCPS requires masks for all this fall

The board of Montgomery County Public Schools voted to require that face coverings be worn by all -- students, teachers, and other staff -- regardless of their vaccination status when the school year starts on August 30. The mask mandate applies to students while they are indoors and riding school buses, but not outdoors or while eating. Those who are unvaccinated are strongly encouraged to wear face coverings when they are outdoors.

Cited as reasons for the board's decision to require masks in schools were the emergent coronavirus variants, advice from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which recommended universal masking in schools for everyone over age 2, and the lack of an effective system for monitoring vaccination status of students. Shortly after the board voted, CDC announced new guidelines that recommend face coverings be required inside schools in the fall.

MCPS leaders said they will work with health officials throughout the 2021-2022 school year to evaluate mask requirements and determine if changes are warranted.

THE WORLD IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED

the world is temporarily closed

we've hidden behind masks

and closed the shutters

to our lives

the doors will open someday

or at least,

we hope they will

we can't live like this forever

i like how the sky never closes

the stars stay bright

maybe they could teach us

something

'temporarily'

is the word i like the most

it will be gone soon,

and it will return to normal.
