Historian Jesse Stiller

The Biden administration recently rolled out the second phase of a sweeping plan to reconfigure the nation’s economy. This lecture/discussion will delve into the dimensions of that plan, focusing on what’s in it, why it’s so controversial, and what its adoption might mean for our country’s future.

Presenter: Jesse Stiller is a historian and writer, who specializes in American history, modern European history, and international relations. Stiller received his Ph.D. from the City University Graduate School, where he completed his studies under the guidance of the renowned historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr. As a government historian, Stiller taught military history to Army officers and banking and financial history at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, a unit of the U.S. Treasury Department.

THE SHOP ON MAIN STREET

August 2, 2021

 Ján Kadár, Czechoslovakia,1965, 125 minutes, B & W Slovak/Yiddish/German/Latin (English Subtitles)

An inept Slovak peasant is torn between greed and guilt when the Nazi-backed bosses of his town appoint him “Aryan controller” of an old Jewish widow’s button shop. Humor and tragedy fuse in this scathing exploration of one cowardly man’s complicity in the horrors of a totalitarian regime. Made near the height of Soviet oppression in Czechoslovakia, The Shop on Main Street features intense editing and camera work, which won it the Academy Award™ for Best Foreign Film in 1965.

MOCO Movies in the Park

Free ‘Movies in the Parks' Series Continues With ‘Remember the Titans’ on Friday, July 23, at Jesup Blair Park in Silver Spring

Sorry for the late notice, LLI just saw this event advertised and wanted to share.

Jesup Blair Local Park is located at 900 Jesup Blair Dr. It is just off Georgia Avenue near the border of the District of Columbia. Free parking is available at Jesup Blair Local Park and in the Montgomery College parking garage across the street on Jesup Blair Drive.

Seating begins at 8 p.m. The movie will be shown on the sports field behind the historic building. The movies will be shown on the grass, so movie goers should bring blankets, towels or lawn chairs to set up their own spots. Tents, hammocks and items that may obstruct a movie-goer’s view are prohibited.

The first 50 attendees to stop by the Montgomery Parks table will receive a free picnic blanket.

For the Friday night showings, Montgomery Parks is partnering with the Maryland-National Capital Park Police, who will be on-site throughout the evening to keep the event safe. Some officers will be on horseback to show off their trusted animal companions and will be bringing a police vehicle to offer tours to interested residents.

More information about the movie series is available at https://www.montgomeryparks.org/event-team/movies-in-the-parks/.
