Virtual Support Groups - Stroke Back Center

The Stroke Back Center provides ongoing and personally meaningful programs within a supportive and peer-driven environment that is affordable for all stroke and brain trauma survivors, enabling
them to achieve their maximum potential.

SCC does everything it can to assist survivors and their families offering a path that allows them to re-engage in life. The Life Participation Approach to Aphasia: everyone affected by aphasia is entitled to service, at all stages of recovery, and success is measured by overcoming personal and environmental barriers.

Caring Connection
Recognizing that a stroke affects many facets of a person’s life and also members of the stroke survivor’s family, the Stroke Comeback Center hosts a Caring Connection. The Caring Connection is an informal support group led by caregivers themselves, for the family and friends who live with or help in the home life of Stroke Comeback Center members. The group shares tips, resources, solutions, and encouragement. These meetings are confidential and people are encouraged to reach out to each other outside of these meetings. While everyone has a unique situation, there are many shared experiences that no one should have to go through alone.

While this group is dedicated to supporting caregivers, The SBC recognize that it may be difficult to attend a meeting if there is no one to care for your loved one. The SBC provides activities if a caregiver brings a member to the Center during Caring Connection meetings. This is an additional opportunity for connecting with other members.

Caring Connection meetings take place in both the Vienna and Rockville Centers on designated Saturday mornings. Please contact either Center for upcoming meeting dates or access the member portal for dates.

What are Virtual Groups?
Virtual groups use technology (computer with camera and microphone, smartphone or tablet) and free software (Zoom) to deliver classes at a distance by linking survivors with clinicians for groups, education or individual consultation. This technology allows survivors face-to-face communication with others in the stroke and brain trauma community without leaving home. Research has proven that although different, it is an effective way to work on skills.
