Artist Statement My work
explores the paradoxical nature of the strength and fragility of
paper as a medium. I was drawn to papermaking as a way to combine
my installation, sculpture, and drawing practices using one
material. Hand papermaking is the process making sheets of paper
by sifting beaten fibers (i.e. cotton, flax, abaca) suspended in
water through a screen. Through the wet process, papermaking
gives me the ability to manipulate the final form it takes as it
dries. I'll harness the environments around me, while I'm working
outside such as letting the rain make impressions on the work as
it dries. I've recently delved into casting forms made of
plexiglass scraps discarded during the art framing process. |

Join us
for Time for Growth: In the Studio with Artist &
Entomologist Kimberly Nesci Thursday, August 5th 8pm-9pm. Artist
Statement I grew
up in rural St. Mary’s County playing in the tributaries of the
Chesapeake Bay. My interactions with the natural world cultivated
a lifelong fascination with insects and other living things.
This, combined with an awareness of our need to respect the
environment and an appreciation of agriculture, led me to pursue
a degree in entomology. In 2020 as a result of the pandemic, I
found myself with an abundance of time that I previously spent
commuting. I pursued mixed media art classes online as an outlet.
These classes, the community they fostered, and my renewed
creativity provided an opportunity for significant personal growth
during a unique and stressful time. My work evolved over the
course of the pandemic from gel-plate monoprints to collages
using those prints to, most recently, figure drawing and
encaustic work. Either insects themselves, which I consider to be
beautiful and fascinating creatures, or their influence
(encaustic wax is made from beeswax) are woven throughout my
work. |

About
Kimberly Nesci Growing
up, Kimberly Nesci's interactions with the natural world
cultivated a lifelong fascination with insects and, ultimately, a
degree in entomology. During the 2020 lockdown, she renewed her
creativity through online evening mixed-media art classes. The
collaborative and supportive nature of these classes combined
with a welcoming community allowed for a true outlet and
opportunity for personal growth during these unique and stressful
times. Her work evolved from gelatin prints to collages from
those prints to, most recently, cold wax and encaustic, both made
from beeswax. Insect images and insects’ influence on our world
are woven throughout her work. |
