THE INTERAGES CONNECTOR

STAYING CONNECTED WHILE STAYING HOME

Staying in Touch

Hello JCA Interages Volunteers,

We would love to learn about you and your volunteer experience, your ideas for programming and partnering with other organizations. To share your thoughts, please contact Indira Dingledine at idingledine@accessjca.org or (301) 255 - 4239.

FAMILY HIGHLIGHT

We are honored to present brothers Joey (16),

Isaac (12), Tommy (10).

They have been volunteering for 3 years-- first in SHARE and now as pen pals in SHARE From A Distance.

When asked why they participate or what they like about the program:

Tommy said, "I get to meet other people and learn from them. It's fun!"

Isaac said, "I've learned a lot from my penpal! I also like telling her what I know about history and some of our famous battles."

SHARE From A Distance

SHARE From A Distance provides meaningful connections between young people and older adults.

JOIN SHARE FROM A DISTANCE AND BECOME A PEN PAL

Are you or someone you know interested in being matched with a young person to exchange letters back and forth? Build a relationship with a young person during this difficult time when people of ALL ages are feeling isolated and eager to make connections. Only first names are given and all correspondence is filtered through JCA staff.

You can choose to write to a student via email or postal mail. We have more students that are interested, even from Texas. We need more older adults. For more info. or to sign up, please email sharefromadistance@accessjca.org. Thanks for your help and support!

Interages Interview

Interages had such success having a young person conduct a Zoom interview of the Interages Founder, Austin Heyman, that we started an interviewing program. The students earn Service Learning hours for their time preparing and interviewing. Previous interviews are available on our website.

In this issue, we highlight Sara, a dedicated volunteer and 10th-grade student, who interviewed Mike Leonard, an Interages volunteer and marathon runner who is in his 80s. To view the interview click here.

TUTORING WITH

DALY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

The JCA Heyman Interages Center has a partnership with Thriving Germantown. Thriving Germantown is a multi-generational, multi-tiered case management and care coordination program developed to reduce the impact of poverty on families living in the Germantown area, with emphasis on the Captain James E. Daly Elementary School community.

Through this program, JCA Heyman Interages volunteers supports the improvement of children’s academic achievement by providing one-on-one tutoring to kids. At the moment, 14 Interages volunteers are providing tutoring sessions to 15 students. In February alone, these wonderful volunteers provided 107 hours of direct services to the students. The volunteers are going above and beyond by providing not only tutoring services to the students, but also helping families with other specific needs.

We, the Interages staff, want to give a big THANK YOU to these amazing volunteers. We understand that it was not an easy task because teaching virtually is a challenge. Please know that you are making a change in these students lives because, on top of providing academic support, you reinforce their confidence and self-esteem, and you are making them feel worthy and unique by meeting with them one on one

We hope that soon we will get more referrals from Thriving Germantown so we can expand this vital program.
