Let’s Talk HIV | Trans Health in Montgomery County
Tuesday, May 18th, 2021 | 3-4:00 p.m.

In its Plan to End HIV, Montgomery County cites lack of access to healthcare for trans and gender expansive residents as a barrier to HIV prevention and treatment. In this virtual module, panelists will discuss the landscape of trans healthcare in Montgomery County, including insight into how healthcare and social service environments affirm or exclude trans people, and how MoCo-based providers can do better.

Join us for part VI of an SSTCi special event: Postcards from the Edge: A Gathering of Globetrotters Sharing Rapid-Fire Travelogues facilitated by SSTCi Executive Director Lisa Martin Friday, May 14 5pm-7pm. Bring your beverage of choice as this will also be a combined virtual Happy Hour to connect and share travel stories.

 

Share photos and a story of a special place you've visited One photo of you, plus up to 5 others and tell us about your trip!

 

* Pick your 5-6 photos of ONE special place/destination in the world you have visited.

 

* Include a photo that includes you at the site. 

 

* Then share with a 3 minute or less story.

 

During the share & tell time, we will also be enjoying an international happy hour, so please come prepared with a cocktail (or other beverage) from a special place in the world. You may be asked to share the recipe!

About Our Facilitator

Lisa Martin has over 25 years of experience working with arts and cultural organizations on both US coasts, as well as across Europe. 

 

Lisa has served as Executive Director of Silver Spring Town Center Inc since November 2011. As the first Executive Director of SSTCi (a 501c3), she has oversight of over 100 ongoing SSTCi programs and events that take place throughout the year in Downtown Silver Spring primarily at the Silver Spring Civic Building and Veterans Plaza. These events include the Silver Spring Blues Festival & Blues Week, the Harvest Moon Festival, Tribute to America's Veterans Concert, as well as SSTCi's Arts Salon and Civic CafĂ©, plus performance series on Veterans Plaza, including Twilight Tuesdays and Wednesday Night STARZ. Lisa has also created a number of special events, as well as SSTCi's World Bazaars two other popular programs: SSTCi's Film & Lecture Series and SSTCi's SPARKLE "Senior Programs Aimed at Re-Kindling Lifetime Engagement presented in collaboration with Silver Spring Village.

 

She has over 25 years of experience working with arts and cultural organizations and events, both domestically and abroad, including the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, VSA Arts International Festival in Washington, DC; San Diego Opera, the San Diego Museum of Man, the Parnu International Anthropology and Documentary Film Festival in Estonia, as well as a wide variety of embassy events. She has also worked in research and evaluation for museums, galleries, science centers and historic sites.

 

Lisa is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer having served as an English Teacher in Estonia 96-98. She has served on boards related to international development and cultural exchange, including the international board of directors of Partners of the Americas, and as president of the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Washington DC. In 2013, as part of a Partners of the Americas cultural exchange, she traveled to Brasilia on an Education and Culture Program travel grant sponsored by the US State Department. As part of this exchange, she gave several presentations entitled Community Building Through the Arts in Public Spaces, which details her work with SSTCi in particular and creative placemaking in general.

 

She has a Master's Degree in Arts Management from American University, a BS in Cultural Anthropology and BA in Journalism from San Diego State University, as well as an Executive Certificate in Facilitation from the Institute of Transformational Leadership at Georgetown University.

 

Lisa is recipient of the 2016 Montgomery County Executive's Award for Excellence in the Arts & Humanities for Community Leadership, and is a member of the 2017 Core Class of Leadership Montgomery.

 

Lisa is an avid traveler having visited over 30 countries and over 40 of the 50 states with a tendency to visit certain places of the world over and over again where she has family and/or friends, or simply a special connection.

 

In her spare time, she also enjoys visiting festivals and museums, films, theatre, comedy writing, doing art (encaustic, mosaics & collage), and singing in two choirs, including the Washington International Chorus and the Baltimore Washington Estonian Choir.

Wheaton Arts Parade: Plein Air Demonstration
Saturday, May 1

Drop by to observe artists as they paint en plein air, French for “in the open air.”   Painting and drawing outdoors enables artists to capture changing details of weather and light as they occur.  The plein air artists are all either current or former artists with the Wheaton Arts Parade, whose exhibit, Path of Pyramids, is on the Museum grounds until May 23.

Documentary Screening and Artist Talk

A screening of artist Alyscia Cunningham’s 30-minute film I Am More Than My Hair, telling the stories of women who have lost their hair and exploring the meaning of beauty.

Ms. Cunningham seeks to educate the viewer and bring awareness to alopecia (the partial or complete absence of hair from areas of the body where it normally grows). The screening will be followed by a talk by Cunningham and Q&A.

An exhibition aimed at changing the perception of hair loss and industry-standard beauty while creating inclusion and accessibility for those who are experiencing loss of hearing and sight.

Anthony Gaskins, The Hat Man

Open Mondays and Wednesdays 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, and Fridays 10:00 am – 8:00 pm.

A collection of handcrafted hats by artist and milliner Anthony Gaskins.  Mr. Gaskins is the creator of “Caps for Chemo,” an idea he developed after losing his parents, sister, and mentor to cancer.  His hats showcase one way cancer patients can recapture confidence after experiencing the hair loss that often accompanies chemotherapy.

Outdoor Sculpture Walk

Open daily. On-site parking is available.

An outdoor exhibit of 13 human-sized pyramids designed by Montgomery County Artists. Come take a walk along the “Path of Pyramids.” Each of these large pyramid sculptures was created by a local artist and they all speak to Wheaton’s diverse cultures.
