What is the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day?

Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and
honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also remembered, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served - not only those who died - have sacrificed and done their duty.

For Veterans Day, the Commission on Veterans Affairs would like to feature on our website Veterans who are living and that we can honor for their service. FYI We pay tribute to all county residents from the County who were KIA going back to World War I and that is on our website year around. You can submit your own information or nominate someone you know, with their support of you doing this.

We are requesting a photo, – name and rank, when and where we they served, anything of interest they want to share. Same parameters as the fallen heroes site: “men and women as enlisting, being originally from, or having at one time lived in Montgomery County”.. And for those for whom we already have profiles, for this Veterans Day we could do the short blurb and include the link to their larger profile.

Please submit your/the information to Carly.Clem@montgomerycountymd.gov
