Engage and Encourage - creative care curriculum

2022 | Volume 1

Cognitive Therapy / Stimulation

Offering stimulating and intellectual activities can increase synapses in participants and brains, which is a good thing! While fitness and wellness classes keep our bodies moving, please don’t leave out exercising our minds, especially for seniors.

Keep it Simple

When it comes to dementia, a big belly laugh may be the best medicine. New research indicates that laughter may be just as effective as antipsychotic medications for reducing anxiety in older adults with dementia. Here are three things you can do to use humor every day. First, always have a joke of the day. Second, pass around a strange object in a fabric bag, and invite participants to describe what they feel & guess at what the article might be. Third, create playful and joy-filled moments – laugh at yourself – and others will laugh with you.

Physical activity and creative expression are tried-and-true means to boost mood, ease agitation, and help seniors feel valued, loved and connected.
