In the previous edition of this series, we touched upon the significance of daily exercise and how it can improve the quality of life. In this edition, we will explore the numerous resources available in Montgomery County to help you stay physically active while engaging with the community. Reconnecting with others is one of the three r’s in the journey toward effective caregiving. While joining the community may be viewed as a quest of self-improvement, you don’t have to do it alone.
Going to a recreation or senior center can be an activity that the caregiver and loved one do together to strengthen their bond; or perhaps it can be done as an outing with friends and family. The main idea is to go out and experience the world from a different perspective. Doing so will open up more possibilities and wonderful opportunities. Nevertheless, it is also okay if you prefer to go on your own. There is a wide variety of local centers that are simply waiting to be discovered. Exploring these resources as an individual enables one to meet new people and share unique stories. Whether you decide to go as an individual or with a group, one thing is for sure: there is something for everyone there.
A good starting place would be to browse through the Montgomery County Recreation website. Here, you will find a long list of recreation centers under the “Facilities” drop-down menu. If you are an adult of 55 years or older, you are welcome to visit the various senior centers in the County as well. In addition to these state-of-the-art senior centers, there is a travel program for senior citizens called SOAR (Senior Outdoor Adventures in Recreation); and this special program will enable you to do exactly as the name suggests. For any questions regarding this specific program, please contact the SOAR trip coordinator at 240-777-4926.
The aforementioned program is only one of several other programs provided by Montgomery County’s Department of Recreation. Viewing the “Activities & Programs” drop-down menu, you will find that there are aquatics, camps, classes, events, sports, and many more for people of all ages to enjoy. To learn more about these centers and what they have to offer, please read the Summer Guide 2018 in PDF format here. If you prefer to have a hard copy of the guide, you can look at various recreation and parks facilities (listed here) or at select Montgomery County Libraries. If you’d like to have the program guide delivered to your home, you can subscribe to all five guides for only $5, explained at the link above.
